Robert Plant
"'The Blanket of Night' is devastatingly to the point. With the minimal amount of words, Guy [Garvey] manages to encapsulate the hope and the fear that must be in the minds of refugees who attempt a journey across the water."
Robert Plant began his music career as a singer and lyricist with the British rock band Led Zeppelin. Plant chose to record a version of the Elbow track 'The Blanket of Night'.

Tinariwen
"Whatever the problem is, we can always look for a solution and try to find it."
Grammy Award-winning group Tinariwen’s contribution to the album is delivered in their mother tongue. It centres around the need for people to open their eyes and take notice of the world around them. The trials experienced by those forced to become refugees are not unfamiliar to Tinariwen. Their founder, Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, was a child refugee who was forced to flee his home in Mali after his father was executed in the 1963 uprising.

Scroobius Pip
"The point of this is that more people hear these stories. Let’s get these stories out there and increase understanding of the plight of refugees."
Beat poet Scroobius Pip met Ramelle, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo. She told Pip her story of persecution and years of living in poverty in the UK. Then Pip partnered with Congolese artist Didier Kisala to create an emotive piece drawing on themes from Ramelle’s story.

Kindness
"I’ve seen with my own eyes that anyone’s life can be turned upside down overnight, so when I was told about the project, I had to be involved."
Artist/producer Kindness (Adam Bainbridge) used to volunteer for the British Red Cross refugee services. He approached the organisation when he heard about the Long Road project. His track tells the story of Ayman, a Syrian refugee. It reflects the things that Ayman misses about home and the huge challenge of knowing your friends and family are in danger.

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars
"Not all that is lost, you should stand up and make the difference, refugee Ruben Koroma."
The All Stars were propelled to fame after featuring in a documentary. They were using music to comfort and educate people in a Red Cross refugee camp during the Sierra Leone civil war. The band were keen to contribute their unique insight to the Long Road album, striking an uplifting, straight-talking tone in their track about why refugees flee.
